POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Interns and Volunteers

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION

Migrants Rights International (MRI) is a non-governmental organization and federation of migrants’ and migrants’ rights organizations, trade unions and faith-based groups within the various global regions promoting and defending the human rights of migrants. Its membership currently brings together over 500 organizations in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the United States

MRI defends and promotes the recognition and respect for the rights of all migrants and members of their families. It works in diverse international fora including the UN system (in the Human Rights Council, with the UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants, world conferences, and other mechanisms) as well as other inter-governmental negotiations, including the Global Forum on Migration and Development. It is committed to the universal ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Migrant Workers, and works to support migrants’ and migrants’ rights organizations in their work.

This is a unique opportunity for interns and volunteers to be able to expand skills and experience while making a contribution to defending migrants’ rights and strengthening migrants’ rights movements around the world.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Interns and volunteers will have responsibilities for one or more of the following tasks (to be agreed in discussion with supervisor):

* Assist in translations of materials between English, Spanish, French and possibly Portuguese

* Writing articles for organizational newsletters and bulletins, content for website

* Assist in communication with MRI member organizations

* Drafting position statements, brochures, campaign materials, informational materials, human rights reports, fundraising proposals, grant reports, donor appeals, and other materials

* Developing content for website, and web updating

* Policy research, analysis and writing

* Assist in advocacy and campaigns to defend migrants' rights at the international, regional and local level

* Administrative tasks (mailings, database updating, other)

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Fluency and writing skills in one of the following languages required: English, French or Spanish

* In addition, the ability to read, communicate in, and write understandably in at least one additional language, out of the following list of languages: English, French, Spanish, or Portuguese strongly preferred

* Commitment to social justice and migrants’ rights

* Interest in migrants’ rights, human rights, or related field

* Basic office skills and computer literacy and the ability to use Word, email, and world wide web required.

PREFERRED SKILLS

* Ability to conduct research and analysis preferred but not required

* Knowledge or experience in web updating (using Dreamweaver and/or Joomla) preferred (some training can be provided)

* Experience in graphic design and familiarity with Photoshop, Excel, InDesign, Flash or other graphic design programs, is preferred but not required (some training provided).

Training and information will be provided on international human rights and migrants’ rights framework and international advocacy.

LOCATION:

(1) Oakland, California, United States

(2) Manila, Philippines (full-time 6 months commitment required)

(3) Bamako, Mali

COMPENSATION

None

MINIMUM COMMITMENT

Interns: Minimum 8 - 40 hours a week for 12 weeks.

Volunteers: Flexible commitment

(For Manila, full-time 6 months commmitment required)
